Matthew Mouse by Iris Calaci

This is a story of a little country mouse named Matthew. Matthew lives in a small corner of the little church on the hill. He is just ten years old, as mice count days. Matthew is all alone in the world, but full of hope and dreams.

Little Matthew was orphaned when he was six. His parents were hunting for food one day and took different directions. Poppa Mouse was carried off by a hawk, while Momma fell into a brook and was swept downstream seen clinging to a tree branch.

When night began to fall, and his parents did not return, Matthew curled into the smallest ball he could within the branches of the bush he called home.

When the sun rose the next morning, his parents had still not returned. Matthew became worried, and began to call out for them.

Suddenly, he heard a twig snap behind him. When he turned, he looked up into the the smiling face of Father Michael who scooped him up, cuddled him and took him home to live in the little church.
